Combining Scania's Lowline cab with a rear-steer chassis results in a refuse collector that's both crew-friendly and highly manoeuvrable

Spare a thought for your local refuse collection crew: Out in all weathers, battling with overfilled wheelie bins with wonky wheels, in and out of the cab all day, struggling through Britain's narrow, twisty streets and lanes. It can't be much fun.

Now, while Scania can't do much about the climate – and it doesn't have a fix for wobbly wheelies either – the company can help when it comes to solving the other two problems listed above; namely cab-access and manoeuvrability.

For the crew of a refuse collector, repeatedly entering and exiting the cab – something they may have to do up to 120 times a day – has become far easier since the addition of the Scania Lowline cab to the 4-Series range. In standard trim, the low-slung Lowline comes with two steps. But, to make a good thing even better, it can also be supplied with full air-suspension which allows it to 'kneel' and permits a single entry-step. The first such example was supplied as a demonstrator to national waste management vehicle rental operator Trio Hire

Direct, which was more than prepared to offer the truck out to the rigours of the hire market.

"As a long-time user of Scania refuse collectors, we know them to be a robust and ruggedly-built product that's very acceptable from the driver and crew's point-of-view – exactly what the hire market needs," comments Trio's Managing

Director, Colin Hinson. "What's more, the Lowline is built mainly from standard componentry that can be readily replaced through the Scania dealer network. As such, it is an ideal vehicle for this kind of work."
