Since then, in her battle to achieve safer transport – not just for her own children, but for all children nationwide – Pat has campaigned long and hard. Her success means that children in the UK must now be provided with a safety belt whenever they travel on a coach or in a minibus.
Today, BUSK is recognised national and internationally as an expert in the vehicular safety of children and young people. Many trials are currently on-going in the UK today using dedicated school vehicles – all down to the efforts of BUSK. In short, the organisation has succeeded in placing school transport safety firmly at the top of the agenda.
In 2004, at the request of Scania, Pat Harris drew up a specification for a school coach that met the highest safety standards. The result was the S-Kool, a vehicle which is now carries an endorsement from BUSK.
To complete the specification, Scania are now working with BUSK to run a national competition for children and young people to design an emergency exit sign that very young children will be able to understand.
