Statutory Thorough Examination (LOLER)

LOLER stands for Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998. Legislation states that all lifting equipment (eg: tail-lifts) provided for use at work must meet specific legal requirements and undergo ‘Thorough Examinations’ carried out regularly by a ‘Competent Person’.

Things to know about LOLER

  • Employers are obliged by law to ensure all its tail-lifts comply with LOLER requirements.

  • The law states that ‘Thorough Examinations’ for tail-lifts that carry people, including the lift operator, must be carried out by a ‘Competent Person’ every six months.

  • The ‘Thorough Examination’ provides a detailed examination report on the overall condition of the tail-lift.

  • The Health and Safety Executive can ask to see a ‘Thorough Examination’ report at any time.

  • Weight tests or Service Reports are not the same as statutory “Thorough Examination” reports.

  • Failure to comply with LOLER standards carries substantial penalties, including fines or even imprisonment.

Scania has invested heavily in its Mobile Engineers to ensure they have the appropriate  technical training, health and safety knowledge and practical experience to carry out all necessary LOLER tests and examinations.
