The use of biofuels raises a number of technical issues which need to be addressed and carefully managed for successful operation.
- The hydroscopic nature of biodiesel attracts condensation in bulk storage tanks and vehicle fuel tanks.
- The organic structure of biofuel encourages bacteria growth. Care needs to be taken if the vehicle is laid up.
- Biodiesel has poor cold weather characteristics.
- Biodiesel has a high boiling point. As a consequence, any unburnt fuel getting into the sump dilutes the oil and reduces the oil's lubricative qualities.
- Biodiesel has a low flash point (32°C compared to diesel's 62°C).
- Biodiesel has a lower calorific value than conventional diesel, which raises questions of power and fuel consumption.
- The oxides of nitrogen (NOx) levels will increase when using biofuel.
- As a biological product, biofuels have a shelf-life that can be affected by factors such as temperature and humidity.
- Biodiesel has a solvent action: Keep clear of paintwork, Can possibly damage rubber
- seals and fuel hoses, Cleans out sediment in storage tanks and vehicle fuel tanks
