It is an advanced development of exhaust gas recirculation technology – a concept that has universal adoption for heavy commercial vehicles in the USA and lighter commercials and cars throughout the world.
What’s special about the Scania solution?
Scania EGR has a patented variable geometry venturi. This simple device is the means by which recirculating gases are controlled in a way that maintains good fuel economy. The ability to maintain low emissions with outstanding operating economy is as consistent as it is impressive.
What else is special?
A second critical factor is fuel injection. The 5-cylinder engines use electronically actuated unit injectors, whereas the 6-cylinder engines the Scania HPI system with hydraulically actuated unit injectors. In either case, the combination of precise timing and high-pressure injection results in effective control of particulates. This is a critical factor in the control of emissions during the combustion stage.
And something more?
A third factor in the success of these engines is the oxidising catalyst in the exhaust system. The catalyst removes some of the particulates and eliminates the diesel smell. The Scania system is maintenance-free and will recover if high-sulphur diesel temporarily finds its way into the tank.
It’s results that count.
However advanced or simple the technology, you want results. That’s what you get: cleaner combustion in all circumstances without the need for aftertreatment, the convenience of not needing additives or extra tanks, and overall economy at a level you’ve come to expect from Scania.
