Technology that delivers economy
  Cylinder heads

Each cylinder has its own individual multi-valve cylinder head. An individual head offers a number of advantages.

Economy: A cylinder head covering more than one cylinder imposes restrictions on the potential for developing efficient intake and outlet channels. This arises because cooling and clamping requirements compromise head design. The Scania individual cylinder does not suffer from these impediments. Consequently, there is maximum scope for creating a design that pursues good fuel consumption as the primary goal – a design that provides the best possible route for rapid gas exchange. The two intake ducts generate two different swirl patterns above the bowl of the piston, creating ideal air-fuel mix. The two exhaust ducts provide a fast, clear exit for combusted gases.

Low emissions: A multi-valve head is the most effective design for low exhauste emissions. The Scania design, optimised for fuel economy, has the benefit of keeping down levels of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and hydrocarbons.

Cost of operation: Apart from fuel economy, consider service and maintenance costs. Should a cylinder overhaul be needed, it is far quicker and less costly to remove and refit an individual head covering one cylinder than a single head covering three or six cylinders.
