It is a useful coincidence that the design aspects of the engine that promote fuel efficiency and performance, also help to provide a more effective exhaust brake. The exhaust brake for the 16-litre V8 engine produces 300 kW at 2300 r/min. This is a result of the high forces needed to operate the valves and the strength and dimensions of the roller tappets.

Operational safety: The exhaust brake performance on all Euro 3 engines conforms to ADR standards. (Retardation using the exhaust brake only.)

Overall braking performance: Combined with the Scania Retarder, the exhaust brake provides a highly effective auxiliary braking system at high and low speeds.
