Scania-ADL gas-powered demonstrator nears completion

A Scania gas-powered bus with ADL Enviro 300NG bodywork will soon embark upon an extensive series of demonstrations with a number of high-profile UK bus operators. The programme is scheduled to begin in mid-March and has been created in response to the interest generated following the recent announcement that Reading Buses is to become the first adopter of Scania-ADL gas-powered vehicles, with delivery of 20 units due to commence in May 2013.

The demonstrator, which is Green Bus Funding compliant, has now successfully completed all necessary homologation and certification tests.  Featuring a Scania K UB4x2 chassis with a 270 horsepower Scania OG9 G04 engine, the vehicle is capable of operating on either Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) or Bio Natural Gas (BNG). The engine offers high efficiency and low fuel consumption with no need for exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). It is based on the same platform as Scania's modular-build 9.3-litre diesel engine, which limits the number of new components required for the low entry gas chassis to around 40 items.

The 12.2-metre overall length ADL Enviro 300NG body provides seating for a total of 40 passengers.  The driver's seat, Transito saloon seats, rear five-person seating unit and wheelchair bump pad are all finished in e-leather green with cream piping, with the wheelbox and tip-up seats finished in green only.   Complementing the seating is Tara bus Gaya Wood 4521 Yellowstone flooring and cool white interior LED lighting.  The vehicle has Hanover electronic type destination equipment with LED illumination. The demonstrator is also equipped with wifi and a Synectics 7 camera CCTV system.

Commenting on forthcoming arrival of the Scania-ADL demonstrator, Scania (Great Britain) Limited's Director of Bus, Coach and Engine Sales, Tony Tomsett, comments, "The levels of interest in this exciting new gas-powered product developed by Scania and ADL are exceptional, with operators the length and breadth of the UK keen to try a vehicle for themselves.  Our demonstration programme has been designed to fulfil that need, and we are now very much looking forward to sharing the potential benefits of gas power with as wide an audience as possible."

Robert Davey, Group Commercial Director at ADL, commented: "We are delighted to be taking to the road with this exciting new initiative.  It is clear that Reading’s decision to buy 20 of the vehicles has stimulated a huge amount of interest, so the message to operators is clear: 'Get on board now if you want to feature in the demonstration programme.'  From an ADL perspective, the CNG technology
adds yet another dimension to our product portfolio of hybrid and alternative
fuel options."
