Go South Coast commits to Scania EGR Euro 4 technology

Dorset-based Go South Coast has taken delivery of 34 Scania OmniCity double-deck service buses from Scania (Great Britain) Limited.

In addition, the company has a further 39 Scania double-deckers, comprising 27 OmniCitys and 12 Optare-bodied vehicles on order for 2009 delivery, plus nine Scania OmniCity single-deckers scheduled for delivery in November 2008.

"The ability to provide an EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) solution at Euro 4 and the positive operating experiences reported by sister companies within the Go-Ahead Group were the principal reasons behind our decision to opt for Scania," comments Go South Coast Managing Director, Alex Carter.  "In particular, as a multi-location operator we felt that Scania's engineered-in EGR solution would deliver the performance, reliability and consistency of service our business and customers depend upon."

The 34 Scania OmniCitys delivered to date are based on Scania NUD 4x2 chassis and are being operated on a variety of services within Go South Coast's region:

  • Seven are running in the company's Wilts & Dorset fleet on its X3-branded Bournemouth to Salisbury service.
  • One is in the livery of Go South Coast's Bluestar service, operating on the Southampton area network between Southampton and Winchester, and will be joined by a further six in 2009.
  • Nine are servicing Go South Coast's newly won Unilink contract with the University of Southampton.  Reflecting the high passenger loadings of this operation, these vehicles are fitted with twin doors. The nine single deck OmniCitys due in November are also destined for Unilink.
  • The remaining 17 are operating with Southern Vectis on the Isle of Wight.

The Wilts & Dorset, Blue Star and Unilink vehicles are all equipped with 230 horsepower Scania DC9-16 Euro 4 engines and fully automatic five-speed ZF 5HP504 gearboxes while the Southern Vectis buses have 270 horsepower Scania DC9-17 Euro 4 engines driving through fully automatic ZF 5HP594 gearboxes.
All vehicles in both the current and future orders are being supplied via Scania (Great Britain) Limited and will be supported by the company's Fareham and Poole locations.
